Visiting Durban

Getting to Durban

We recommend the most cost-effective route of flying to either Cape Town (CPT) or Johannesburg (JNB) and then taking a local flight to Durban (DUR). Flights from major international hubs, such as Atlanta or Newark, to Johannesburg or Cape Town typically range between $1,300 and $2,300, depending on the airline and time of booking. Airlines like Delta, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines frequently serve these routes. From Johannesburg or Cape Town, domestic flights to Durban are widely available through South African carriers like FlySafair, Mango, and Kulula, at an average price of around $120 roundtrip. Please be sure to check for convenient connections and competitive pricing when planning your trip.

Airport Transportation

Traveling from King Shaka International Airport (DUR) to your hotel in Durban is convenient, with several transportation options available. Depending on your budget, time, and safety preferences, here are the best ways to reach your accommodation:

Hotel-Arranged Airport Transfers

Many hotels, especially those in Umhlanga, Durban Central, and along the beachfront, offer airport shuttle services for guests. These can be arranged before arrival through your hotel’s reception or concierge. While typically more expensive than other options, they provide a safe and hassle-free transfer. Costs vary but usually range between ZAR 300–500 per trip.

Ride-Hailing Services (Uber & Bolt)

Apps like Uber and Bolt operate reliably in Durban and are one of the safest and most convenient ways to travel from the airport. To use these services:

  • Book your ride via the app once you’ve collected your luggage.

  • Follow airport signage to the designated rideshare pick-up zone.

  • Expect fares of ZAR 95–250, depending on distance and demand.

  • Avoid accepting unsolicited ride offers from drivers outside the app.

Private Taxi Services

Taxis are available at the airport, but it is strongly recommended to book through an official provider rather than hailing a cab off the street. To ensure a safe and fair-priced journey:

  • Pre-book a taxi through your hotel or a reputable company such as Rikki Cabs or Mozzie Cabs.

  • Confirm the fare upfront to avoid overcharging—fares typically range from ZAR 350–500 for hotel transfers.

Airport Shuttle Services

Several shared shuttle services run between King Shaka International Airport and key hotel areas, including Umhlanga, Durban Central, and the beachfront. These services are cost-effective for solo travelers but may require advanced booking and have fixed departure times.

Estimated Travel Time & Cost

  • Distance: King Shaka International Airport to Umhlanga hotels – ~17 km (~20 min)

  • Distance: King Shaka International Airport to Durban City Centre – ~35 km (~30-40 min)

  • Ride-hailing fare: ZAR 95–250

  • Pre-booked taxi fare: ZAR 350–500

  • Hotel shuttle fare: ZAR 300–500

For the safest and most convenient experience, pre-arrange transport with your hotel, use ride-hailing apps, or book reputable taxi services rather than accepting rides from unofficial drivers.

Getting Around Durban: Transportation Tips

Durban offers several transportation options, but safety and reliability should be key considerations when getting around the city. Ride-hailing services like Uber and Bolt are the safest and most convenient choices for travelers, as they provide transparent pricing and GPS tracking. Always verify your driver and vehicle details before getting in and avoid accepting rides from unofficial drivers.

If you need a taxi, do not hail one off the street—instead, book through your hotel’s front desk or concierge, as hotels typically work with reputable taxi providers to ensure licensed, safe, and fairly priced rides. This minimizes the risk of overcharging, unregistered drivers, or safety concerns. Reputable taxi services such as Rikki Cabs or Mozzie Cabs can also be pre-booked. Minibus taxis, while commonly used by locals, are not recommended for visitors due to overcrowding, unpredictable routes, and safety concerns.

Public buses, including People Mover buses in central Durban, provide affordable transport on fixed routes, but service can be limited outside the city center. Walking is feasible in well-populated areas like the Golden Mile, but avoid isolated streets, especially at night. Planning your route in advance, using trusted transportation options, and relying on your hotel for taxi bookings will ensure a smooth and safe experience while exploring Durban.

Exchange Rates/Currency

South Africa’s currency is the South African Rand (ZAR), with common denominations of R10, R20, R50, R100, and R200 notes, as well as coins for smaller amounts. As of February 2025, the exchange rate is approximately 1 US Dollar (USD) to 18.35 South African Rand (ZAR), though rates fluctuate, so it’s best to check before traveling. Currency exchange can be done at banks, airport exchange bureaus, or licensed forex outlets like Travelex and American Express, though airport rates may be less favorable.

The most convenient and cost-effective way to get Rand is to withdraw cash from ATMs, which are widely available in shopping centers, banks, and hotels. Major international credit and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger retailers. However, smaller vendors, street markets, and taxis may only take cash, so it’s a good idea to carry some Rand for small purchases and tipping.

Contactless and mobile payments like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are increasingly available at major establishments. To avoid high foreign transaction fees, check with your bank about using your card internationally and whether it’s best to withdraw cash in larger amounts to minimize ATM fees.

Weather

Durban experiences a mild and pleasant winter in August, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 25°C (57°F to 77°F). While the weather is generally warm and sunny during the day, evenings and early mornings can be cooler, so bringing a light jacket or sweater is recommended. Humidity is lower compared to summer months, making August an ideal time for outdoor activities. Although winter sees less rainfall, occasional light showers are possible, so a compact umbrella or rain jacket may be useful.

Despite being winter, Durban still has high UV levels, so wearing sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses, and a hat is important, especially if spending time outdoors or at the beach. The ocean remains relatively warm, but the wind can make it feel cooler, so if you plan to swim, check local conditions.

Safety

Durban is a dynamic and diverse city with much to offer visitors, but it’s important to stay vigilant and take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Follow these safety guidelines during your stay:

At the Hotel

  • Never leave your luggage unattended in public areas.

  • Store valuables, passports, and electronics in the hotel’s safety deposit box.

  • Keep your room locked at all times, whether you’re inside or out.

  • If someone knocks, check through the peephole or call reception before opening the door.

In the Streets

  • Avoid ostentatious displays of expensive jewelry, watches, or cameras.

  • Carry only small amounts of cash, and use cards or mobile payments where possible.

  • At night, steer clear of dark, isolated areas and avoid walking alone.

  • Try not to look like a tourist—walk with purpose and avoid stopping in the middle of the street to check maps or valuables.

  • Stick to well-lit, busy streets and explore in groups when possible.

  • Plan your route beforehand, and if lost, ask a uniformed police officer or a traffic official for directions.

  • When using taxis, ask your hotel or a tourism office to recommend a reliable service rather than hailing one off the street. Or use ride share apps like Uber or Bolt. You should hail the Uber or Bolt ride yourself, and do not accept assistance from people unknown to you.

Durban-Specific Safety Tips

  • Avoid walking alone at night in certain areas, especially around downtown Durban, Warwick Junction, and Albert Park. In the vicinity of the hotel it is still best to use an Uber or Bolt to access shopping malls or restaurants, even though they may be about a 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

  • Be mindful when exploring the beachfront—stick to busier sections of the Golden Mile, particularly during early morning or late evening hours. The same applies to the Umhlanga beaches, which are near the hotel.

  • Avoid using minibus taxis, instead use ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt instead or have your hotel or business call a taxi for you.

  • If visiting townships or informal settlements, go with a guide or local expert rather than venturing alone.

  • On Durban’s beaches, swim only in designated areas with lifeguards, as currents and rip tides can be strong.

  • When driving, keep doors locked and windows up, especially at traffic lights. Be cautious of smash-and-grab incidents and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight.

In case of an emergency, contact South African Police Service (SAPS) at 10111, Emergency Medical Services at 112, Durban Metro Police at 031 361 0000, or the Tourism Safety & Security Helpline at 083 123 2345.

Health

Durban has modern medical facilities, including private hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies, but it’s important to take basic health precautions during your visit. Tap water is generally safe to drink in urban areas, but bottled water is recommended for those with sensitive stomachs. The city is not a malaria-risk area, so no malaria medication is needed, but insect repellent is advised to prevent mosquito bites.

If you need medical assistance, private hospitals provide high-quality care, and it’s recommended to use them over public hospitals. Some of the best private hospitals in Durban include:

  • Netcare Umhlanga Hospital – Umhlanga |  +27 31 560 5500

  • Life Entabeni Hospital – Berea | +27 31 204 1300

  • Netcare St. Augustine’s Hospital – Berea |+27 31 268 5000

For minor health concerns, pharmacies (chemists) are widely available, with major chains such as Clicks and Dis-Chem providing over-the-counter medications. Most pharmacies in shopping malls are open until 7 PM, while 24-hour pharmacies can be found at major hospitals.

In case of medical emergencies, dial:

  • 10177 – South African Ambulance Service

  • 112 – General emergency number (from any mobile phone)

  • 10111 – Police (for urgent assistance)

It’s highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, as private hospitals may require upfront payment. For any serious health concerns, your hotel concierge can also assist in finding a doctor or arranging transport to a medical facility.
