Atsuko Kuronuma is an Assistant Professor by Special Appointment (Education) at the College of Liberal Arts, International Christian University (ICU), Tokyo, Japan. Prior to joining ICU's service-learning program, she gained diverse professional experience, including teaching Japanese in Malaysia and working for several Japanese companies.
At ICU, Atsuko has taught service-learning courses within the liberal arts curriculum and coordinated outbound and inbound international service-learning programs for 15 years. She has developed reciprocal partnerships with universities across Asia and South Africa, including institutions in the Philippines, Indonesia, and India.
Atsuko earned her MA in Education from the University of Tokyo and is currently completing her doctoral dissertation on the institutionalization of service-learning and community engagement at U.S. liberal arts colleges. Drawing on her work at ICU, her comparative research explores how service-learning can be institutionalized as a practice that promotes civic learning among students in Japan.
Atsuko has been actively involved in the IARSLCE Graduate Student Network (GradSN), where she served as Chair in 2024, advancing the global mission of IARSLCE with her peers. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Japan Service-Learning Network, which promotes collaboration between scholars and practitioners in Japanese higher education and K-12 education. Through her work, she continues to advocate for service-learning both locally and globally.
