Luke Terra directs the Community Engaged Learning and Research (CELR) program at the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University. The CELR team supports faculty and students in connecting teaching and research to broader public concerns through service-learning courses, community-engaged internships, and community-based research. Over the last eight years, the CELR team quadrupled the number of community engaged courses, which now reach more than 2,000 students across 55 academic departments. Other signature programs include: Partnerships for Climate Justice in the Bay Area (PCJ in the Bay), a place-based initiative that partners Stanford students and faculty with frontline communities addressing the impacts of climate change in the Bay Area; and Scholars in Service, a public service leave program for faculty to spend 1-4 quarters with community-based organizations and government agencies for the mutually beneficial exchange of research and expertise. Luke joined the Haas Center in 2014 after completing his doctorate in International Comparative Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Prior to his time at Stanford, Luke managed international civic education programs at the Center for Civic Education in Calabasas, CA. He also served as Assistant Director of the Center for Service and Learning at Colorado College. His career in education began as a K-12 history and physical education teacher at public and public-charter schools in Colorado Springs. He was elected to the IARSLCE Board of Directors in 2018 and co-chairs the Awards and Recognitions Committee.
